Melamines & Laminates
What’s the actual difference and what does it mean to me?
How are they made?
-
Melamine
Melamine is made by using resin decorative/coloured paper bonded onto particleboard or MDF. This is done with heat being applied by 200-350kg -per-square-metre of pressure. Once cut to size a 1mm edge is glued on to finish the product
-
Lamintes
Laminates are made with 6 to 8 layers of kraft paper bonded with phenolic resin glue. It’s then pressed with about 1000kg per-square-metre and then topped by a polymer facing. Once cut to size, a 1mm edge is glued on to the finish the product
So, What does all that mean to me?
This is the boring part.
-Both are hardwearing finishes and massive ranges of colours, textures and anti fingerprint ranges
-Both are Australian made
-Both make Countertops to compliment
-Both are just as hard wearing as each other (in my opinion)
-Both can be water damaged, but are extremely difficult to do so
So, which one should I choose then??
Really it’s either, Find the colour and finish you love and go with whichever it happens to be. This is not part of the kitchen you can really go wrong with when it comes to quality
