New Gas cooktop standards and how it impacts overhead cupbaord heights

With the changes to the Australian standards to follow international standards 2 big changes happened

  • For gas, A minimum 650mm gap is now required instead of 600

  • That gap is now based on the trivet height, not the burner height

So this means for anyone installing cabinets in Australia Trivet heights just got crucial, which is annoying because not all brands provide from countertop to heighest point to Trivet.

I’ve built up a list of Trivet heights in one location below. I recommend clicking on this link https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1mU7lbOd3EH9L8mMBHQCOc-wNppWE--Yb5MQYHak9kJE/edit?usp=sharing

press down Ctrl & F at the same time which will appear in the top right corner (below image)

Then type in part of the model you’re after which will become highlighted

If there is a model you need that isn’t in here. Shoot me an email renoinfoau@gmail.com and I’ll get it back to you asap! Once This is a comphresive list for everyone to use we can get back to Focusing on kitchen design and installations instead of worrying about a very costly mistake.

The standards also state it’s to the bottom of the Rangehood and not the overhang on the of the cupboard doors (if you use that instead of handles like most of the industry). 99% of rangehoods on the market and 99.9% of sold rangehoods aren’t more than a 20mm drop down. So lets work 25mm being standard so we never have to think about it

My Summary

(to simplfy this as much as I can, but not all encompasing)

-Allow 65mm from benchtop to top of trivet

-Allow 650mm trivet to rangehood height (as the standards)

-Allow 20mm drop down for Rangehoods so you don’t have to think about this aspect

This means 65 + 650 +20 = 735 is your new height for design from benchtop to underpanel

I’ve listed 2 example below which clients buy all the time. This is to show why the standard overhead heights for Gas cooktops needs to be 730+ and worked backed when needed

Bosch 90cm pack

(PCR9A5B90A which has a 53mm trivet height)

(DHL895DAU which is a 9mm drop from underpanel)

53mm Trivet height + 650mm minimum space + 9mm = 712mm Minimum distance between Benchtop and underpanel

Westinghouse 60cm Pack

(WHG644SC 60cm cooktop)

(WRI524BB 60cm Rangehood)

55mm Trivet height + 650mm minimum space + 10mm = 715mm Minimum distance between Benchtop and underpanel
